The Beauty of Light:…Coping With Seasonal Mood Changes

Beyond the ordinary

The Beauty of Light: Coping With Seasonal Mood Changes

Every year when September arrives, something inside me changes — before the weather, before the clocks, and even before the first grey morning.

I feel it instantly. A heaviness. A familiar emotional shift.

While many people welcome autumn with excitement, I’ve always faced it with a quiet sense of dread.

That moment when summer ends, my thoughts go straight to:

"The grey days are coming…"

"I won’t see sunshine for months…"

"How will I survive another winter?"

For most of my adult life, this has been my personal battle.

And I know I’m not alone, because so many clients at my clinic share the same story.

This emotional and physical drop during autumn and winter is often connected to something called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) — a pattern of low mood linked to reduced daylight.

I want to be very clear:

I am not a medical professional and I do not diagnose or treat medical conditions.

What I share here is simply my personal experience, what has helped me, and how I support people through comforting, sensory beauty treatments at my clinic.

If anyone feels severe symptoms, I always recommend speaking to a GP or mental-health professional.

But here is my story, as someone who has lived this every year.

My Personal Struggle With the Darker Months

For many years, the moment the light changed, everything in me changed too.

I felt:

• My mood drop almost instantly

Exhaustion that sleep didn’t fix

• A strong desire to hide away indoors

Cravings for comfort

• A heavy sadness or anxiety

• The feeling that life lost its colour

• A deep urge to "sleep until March"

Even small tasks felt harder.

And some days, stepping outside the house felt impossible.

But every single time I pushed myself — even just for a short walk or to get some air —

I never regretted it.

The effort always paid off.

That experience taught me something important:

Even when the darkness feels too heavy, one small step can lift you more than you expect.

Understanding What Was Happening to Me

For years, I blamed myself.

Why did the weather affect me so much? Why did I collapse emotionally every autumn?

Then I learned about SAD, and suddenly everything made sense.

Reduced daylight can:

• Lower serotonin (your natural mood supporter)

Increase melatonin (your sleep hormone)

Disrupt your body clock

• Reduce colour, warmth, and sensory stimulation

This isn’t weakness — it’s biology reacting to lack of sunlight.

this didn’t "cure" anything,

but it helped me become kinder to myself

and more proactive in taking care of my emotional wellbeing.

How I Slowly Learned to Cope

What helped me most wasn’t one big solution — it was many small, sensory habits that brought light, warmth, and "summer energy" back into my daily life.

Over time, I created what I call my Sensory Summer Survival Kit.

☀️ Light Therapy & Bright Environments

Because I deeply miss the sunlight:

• LED light therapy

• SAD daylight lamps

Occasional sunbed for warmth and brightness

• bulbs at home

Sitting in sunny cafés, bright gyms, or well-lit spaces

???? Recreating Summer With My Senses

Because my soul misses it:

Mediterranean foods

Colourful fruit bowls

• Summer playlists

Tropical scents and oils

• Sunny travel videos

• Guided beach meditations

???? Bright Makeup & Colourful Clothing

Even when it feels "wrong" in autumn.

Colour lifts the mood more than people realise.

Lanterns, Candles & Balcony Lights

Even a tiny balcony transformed with warm lanterns gave me a feeling of peace and "holiday calm."

???? Happy, Uplifting Conversations

Talking to the right person the direction of the entire day.

Human connection is powerful.

???? Fresh Air — Even If It Feels Impossible

I promise from experience:

Even a 5-minute walk can change everything.

These tools helped me so much that they naturally became part of how I others in my beauty clinic.

How My Struggle Became My at Lolinka Beauty Clinic

Because I have lived this myself, I understand the signs, the feelings, and the emotional weight of the darker seasons.

And that’s why I designed my salon to be a little sanctuary of light, warmth, beauty, and calm, especially during autumn and winter.

It isn’t medical treatment — it’s comfort, relaxation, and emotional support through sensory beauty.

Here’s how I help people feel lighter when the world feels heavy:

Warm, Golden, Sun-Inspired Lighting

To give you the of sunshine.

Mood-Lifting Aromatherapy

Especially citrus, neroli, lavender, bergamotemotional comfort in scent form.

Comforting Treatments & Touch

Massage, facials, warm oils, soft blanketssensory care that relaxes the nervous system.

Positive, Happy Conversation

Sometimes clients need peace.

Sometimes they need talking.

Either way, I hold space for both.

A Mini "Sunshine Escape"

A moment to switch off, breathe, and feel warmth again —

even if it’s outside.

My clinic became my personal healing space…

and now I share that healing space with you.

A Gentle, Important Note

Everything I share comes from:

✔️ Personal experience

✔️ Years of listening to clients

✔️ Lifestyle and tools that supported my own wellbeing

I do not diagnose, treat, or cure medical conditions.

If experiences severe or persistent symptoms of depression, I encourage them to speak with a GP or mental-health professional.

My role is to support the emotional side through beauty, relaxation, sensory care, and comforting experiences.

SAD is so bad and common, even doctors say we (in the UK) should take vitamin D supplements.

That said as you know yourself being happy gives you a glow, your light shines from within.

Keeping up your daily exercise and eating healthy colourful foods will also help not only with mood but in ensuring you maintain the right vitamin levels to hold you over winter.

I hear you and would only add to that, don't forget outdoors you still need a sun screen and when you get home yourself and your skin.

Don't be afraid to reach out, a coffee with friends whilst you walk could be just what you need.
