Begin with proven experience, not the number of logos on the website. Ask to see a couple of case studies that sit close to your stack, and then ask specifically whether those engineers are still with the company. An honest provider is happy to connect you with the engineers. Answers that name nobody at this stage almost always mean you are talking to a reseller.

The paperwork needs a slower read than the pitch. A few clauses carry most of the weight: intellectual property assignment, the NDA, and termination and handover.
